Tillandsia - rhomboidea ex. OM

Description: Tillandsia rhomboidea was previously named T. acostae, however it was reclassified in 1994. This species is native to Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala, where it grows as an epiphyte at altitudes of 40 to 1,600m. This species is similar in structure to T. concolor, however it much larger has many more leaves. It's foliage is quite stiff, and bronze / green in colour depending on light conditions. This species developes a very nice inflorescence spike, which is chunky, and a bright orange / yellow in colour. From the inflorescence spike is produced purple, tubular flowers. The flower spike forms in October / November.

Position: We find this species grows well in a small pot with well draining potting mix, however it will grow just as well mounted. We also recommend growing it in as bright a position as possible (without burning the foliage), as this will cause the plant's foliage to become a much stronger bronze colour. They should receive bright, indirect sunlight. Indoors, an east or west facing window area is ideal. Outdoors under partially shaded conditions is fine but in the colder states protection from frost is required, so keep that in mind.

Watering: As a general rule, a plant in a hot position will require watering every 2-3 days. In a dark, humid environment watering once per week can often be adequate. This can be achieved by misting or dunking the plant. If outdoors, a hose can be used. When dunking a plant, leave submerged in a bowl of water for 10-20 minutes before shaking off excess water. Air plants love to dry out completely between each watering and must never have water sitting at their base as this will cause the plant to rot.

Fertilisation: We recommend fertilising your Air Plants once a fortnight in the warmer months and once a month through winter. We sell Air Plant Fertiliser in our "Decor" section and this bottle can be diluted to create 1L of fertiliser.
